Lifeguarding Review Classes
The Lifeguarding Review course allows currently certified lifeguards and lifeguards with recently expired certifications to review the content of the Lifeguarding course in a classroom setting in about half of the time of a full Lifeguarding course.
To be eligible to participate in Lifeguarding review courses, participants must have current certification in Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or certificates that have expired for no more than 12 months. Participants must be able to show American Red Cross Universal Certificates indicating Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (or a recognized equivalent certificate).
Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding Review course will receive new certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Fee: $200 Members/$275 Non-Members
Lifeguarding Recertification Challenge Test
A Lifeguarding Skills Challenge is an opportunity to earn current American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Lifeguards (also known as CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer) for participants who have previously been certified in Lifeguarding by the Red Cross or another approved agency. The Challenge is a TEST ONLY; there is no classroom review of material. The only input that participants will receive from the instructor will be evaluative feedback on demonstrated skills.
- Candidates must pass the written test with a score of 80% or better. Students who do not pass the written test will not be allowed to proceed, and will need to take a full course to earn certification if their Lifeguarding certification has expired.
- Candidates must then complete the standard Lifeguarding pre-course distance and timed swims.
- Successful candidates will then be required to demonstrate all standard water rescues (including appropriate first aid and resuscitative measures, when required.)
- Following the water portion of the test, candidates will be asked to demonstrate all required skills for both First Aid and CPR for Lifeguards.
The Challenge test is intended for professionals who regularly practice their skills and do not require any additional review. Candidates who have not reviewed their course materials or practiced their lifesaving skills are unlikely to be successful, and should consider taking one of our offered Review courses.
Please note:
- The Examiner is not allowed to provide any instruction or coaching; candidates are responsible for their own preparation.
- NO REFUNDS will be given to candidates who fail (or fail to complete) the Challenge test.
Candidates wishing to challenge any of the Red Cross Lifeguarding courses must be currently certified or have successfully completed a Red Cross Lifeguarding (full or review course) or another acceptable lifeguarding course within the last four years. Current certifications (or those that have expired by no more than 12 months) from the following organizations may be accepted to qualify an individual to take the Lifeguarding Challenge class:
- YMCA Lifeguard
- United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifeguarding
- Lifesaving Society of Canada – Any National Lifeguard Service certification (Pool, Waterfront, Surf or Waterpark)
- National Pool and Waterpark Pool Lifeguard Training or Special Facilities Lifeguard Training
- National Aquatic Safety Council Basic Lifeguard

In addition to the prerequisites for Waterfront Lifeguarding, participants must first complete a recertification challenge of basic lifeguarding skills (including CPR and First Aid.) Lifeguarding for Pool and Waterpark
Many aquatics facilities have added play features like sliding boards, lazy rivers and "spraygrounds" to their pool environment. These elements present the Lifeguard with different challenges than a traditional pool, including moving water and areas with extremely shallow water. Waterfront Lifeguarding teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies both in a pool and at a waterpark environment, but is particularly useful for lifeguard candidates who anticipate working at a traditional pool facility with some advanced Aquatic Play Features. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
Prerequisites
- Minimum age of 15.
- Precourse Swim Test:
- Swim 300 yards continuously.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Fee: $325/ Non-Members: $400
Waterpark Lifeguarding Crossover
Is your pool starting to act more like a Waterpark? Many summer swim clubs and camps have added fun new water play features to their traditional pools, but most lifeguards don't know how to handle the unique hazards that these elements present. The Waterpark Lifeguarding Crossover is a two-day program designed to train currently certified lifeguards in the additional skills that they need to help prevent and respond to emergencies at facilities that have Aquatic Play Features such as slides, spraygrounds and zero-depth (beach-style) shallow ends. The first day of this program is a Lifeguard Recertification Challenge; and upon successful completion candidates will be recertified in traditional (pool) Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Lifeguards. During the second day, candidates will practice rescue skills specifically tailored for environments with Aquatic Play Features, including victim management in rushing water (such as at the bottom of a slide) and rescue skills for extremely shallow water (such as Splash Pads, Lazy Rivers, and speed slide run-outs.) This course is a great resume-builder for guards who want to secure jobs at "higher-end" facilities.
Fee: $150/ Non-Members: $200
