Get Certified!  From prepping young teens to be Junior Lifeguards to training future Lifeguard Instructors, we offer a variety of certification courses in partnership with the American Red Cross and the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF). 

Overview

From prepping young teens to be Junior Lifeguards to training future Lifeguard Instructors, our American Red Cross certification courses at the JCC are designed to make sure participants are prepared for a myriad of life-threatening situations and, where appropriate, are also certified to help others succeed.

Our courses are designed to train individuals who are seeking advancement for job attainment, requirements, or promotion, or simply to learn a new skill.  If you are interested in a single gender lifeguarding or water safety instruction class, please complete this form.

Course Offerings

Designed for ages 11-14, Junior Lifeguarding has a strong focus on developing swimming skills to help participants meet the Lifeguarding course prerequisite. The course also introduces participants to lifesaving skills, such as in-water rescues, use of a rescue tube, and first aid, CPR and AED. Participants also have the opportunity to shadow lifeguards in rotation to get a real sense of being on the job. Prerequisites: Swim 25 yds each of front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 1 min, swim 25 yds of back crawl or elementary backstroke (or float on back for 30 sec), swim 10 ft submerged under water.

Provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. To be eligible, candidates must be 15 on or before the final scheduled class meeting and satisfactorily complete the prerequisite swimming skills evaluation (swim 300 yds using breaststroke and/or front crawl, tread water for 2 minutes with only the legs, timed brick retrieval from deep water). Must attend all class meetings. Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate issued upon successful completion of the course, valid for 2 years.

The Lifeguarding Review Course allows currently certified lifeguards the opportunity to review the content of the Lifeguard course in a classroom setting in about half the time of a full lifeguarding course. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding Review course will receive new certificates in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. Must be able to pass prerequisite swimming skills evaluation (300yd swim, 2min tread without use of arms, timed brick retrieval).

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS COURSE, MUST SHOW PROOF OF CURRENT (or expired within 30 days) CERTIFICATION IN ARC LIFEGUARDING/FIRST AID/CPR/AED.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course trains instructor candidates to teach the basic-level ARC Lifeguarding courses. To be eligible, instructor candidates must be 17 years of age on or before the final scheduled course meeting, possess a current base-level ARC certificate in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the precourse skills session, and demonstrate skill competency in the precourse session.

An abbreviated recertification course for currently certified instructors and instructor trainers. The purpose of the course is to allow participants to review the course content and practice skills in a formal class setting and complete the final written exam. To participate, the individual must possess and provide proof of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED instructor or instructor trainer certificate.

Provides instructor candidates the training needed to teach courses in the ARC Swimming and Water Safety Program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. Prerequisites: you must be 16 years of age by the last day of the class and successfully complete a test of swimming skills prior to beginning the class.

Indoor Pool Schedule – Fall 2023

Pool — Park Heights
New Park Heights Pool Reservation Policy Starting January 28
• Reservations will be required for female swim surrounding the 9:00am and 10:00am hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. At all other times, once pool capacity is reached, the locker room door will be locked. The lifeguard will admit patrons as space allows.
• Reservations will open on Sundays. We recommend making them as early as possible.
• If you require assistance making the reservation you must WALK IN and meet with a member of our Guest Services team.
• All patrons using the pool during these time slots will be required to get a wristband to show to the lifeguard.
