Summer at the J: 2020 Camp Update

After careful review of the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Maryland Department of Health (MDH), we are excited to announce that we are launching Summer at the J on Monday, July 6 at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC!

We do not take opening in-person programming lightly. We have made this important decision in consultation with our camp staff, leadership, lay leaders and medical experts. We are confident we will provide a safe, quality program for campers and staff at our Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC facility and meet all required CDC and Maryland State guidelines.

We know that the program offered under the guidelines will look and feel different than camp from previous summers—and can assure you that Summer at the J will bring the fun and friendship of J Camps by offering fully outdoor programs in a safe, small-group summer environment. Our dynamic team of year-round professionals and summer staff will be here to support your camper as they finally get the chance to be outside, experience hands-on fun, enjoy the company of friends, and come home happy and excited to take on tomorrow.

The Summer at the J Experience

Geared to match some of our original J Camp programs for campers entering Kindergarten through 8th grade, kids will love our Summer at the J offerings:

  • Four tracks have been designed to give our campers a summer program that closely mimics the one they signed up for, with fun twists to meet all the health and safety requirements.  All programs will have free swim daily.
    • Summer at the J Track - This track will offer many of the great activities your J Day campers look forward to each summer: Nature, Science, Athletics, Arts & Crafts, Dance, Music, Yoga/Fitness, Daily Free Swim, Israeli Culture, Gaga, 9-Square, and Shabbabah.  (Please note for safety and MDH restrictions we are unable to run Zipline, Adventure Park, Archery, or Instructional Swim)
    • Arts Track - Campers will participate in outdoor performing and visual arts activities led by local artists and specialists.
    • Sports Track - Sports all day long! Basketball, baseball, soccer, flag-football and more, all modified to fit a no-contact environment.
    • Teen Track - Campers entering 7th & 8th grade will have a traditional day camp experience of activities, including free swim. A special feature of this track will be leadership training workshops and service opportunities, all powered by our innovative 4Front Teen Team
  • J Tennis Academy -  Mr. Adam is excited to bring J Tennis Academy to the Summer at the J program! This half-day program will feature small-group tennis of no more than 9 campers per group on our outdoor courts. This program will focus on enhancing your camper’s tennis skills and therefore will not include free swim or playground in the half-day schedule.
*Campers in Kindergarten through 2nd grade will attend 9:00am-12:00pm
*Campers in 3rd through 8th grade will attend 12:45pm-3:45pm
For older than 8th grade please contact Adam Stein if we have additional capacity.
  • Preschool Ages 2-5 - Summer at the J combines Camp Ami and Noah's Ark programs into one joint offering, as a great way for young children to have a safe, fun summer experience in small groups. Available Monday-Friday from 9:00am-3:30pm, only at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills campus. Read the PreSchool FAQs and contact Kim Davidson to learn more.
UPDATES ON CSA AND POST-CAMP PROGRAMS:

LEGO, Circus, X-Treme Science (8/17-8/28): We still plan to offer post-week options on our Owings Mills Campus.  We will continue to evaluate the phases and guidelines, which will determine what we will be able to offer and how the day will be structured.  We will continue to keep you updated as we know more.
CSA Summer Karate Experience: Karate Camp will be kicking this summer!  Please contact Jen Lake at jen@csakarate.com for more information.

UPDATE ON REMAINING PROGRAMS:

Unfortunately, there are several programs we cannot offer under the Summer at the J platform, as they do not meet current MDH or CDC guidelines. We are working on developing alternative programming for you where possible.

  • J Day Jr:  All campers in the J Day Jr. program will have the opportunity to enroll in the J’s Early Childhood Center Summer program (Owings Mills only), which has been modified to create a safe environment for our youngest campers.  Our youngest campers will thrive in an environment where they can have a fun and safe summer experience, while getting a break from the heat. Stay tuned for more information about this program and the process for moving your camper’s enrollment to the Early Learning Center for the summer.
  • J Camps Plus: Our programs at KSDS will not run this summer. We look forward to providing a great line up of specialty camps next summer to bring Creative Arts, Culinary, STEM, and Nature back and better than ever. You will have the opportunity to switch your campers’ week(s) to one of our other great Summer at the J options.
  • TNT: Due to guidelines around bunk size and groups mixing we cannot allow our TNTs to volunteer with groups of children this summer. We are extending Summer at the J to 8th grade to allow our entering 7th and 8th graders to have a full camp day of activities and leadership experiences as a part of our main program model.
  • CIT: Due to the same guidelines as mentioned for TNT we will not be able to run our CIT program this summer. 4Front, Baltimore's community-wide Jewish teen initiative is planning some great things to help you fill your summer with friends and fun.  In the days and weeks ahead, check out their quaranTEEN page for both virtual and in person opportunities to gather.  You can also #jumponthebus for 4Front's virtual college road trip happening now!
  • Camp Koolanu: Due to the lack of outdoor facilities and the current restrictions in Baltimore City, our boys only camp cannot run. In the days and weeks ahead, check out our Park Heights J Kids program, for both virtual and in person opportunities throughout the summer.

We are tremendously excited to offer a fun camp experience this summer. It’s been a whirlwind spring navigating these crazy and challenging times and we have been in constant contact with American Camping Association, Maryland Department of Health, medical professionals, and other experts, to make the best decision we can for our camp community.

Because of safety guidelines and requirements, we expect to have limited space in the Summer at the J program. New applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please complete the Camper Application to apply.

Our dynamic, year-round professional team has years, if not decades of camp experience. Combined with our excellent seasonal camp staff, we will ensure our summer programs are exciting, super fun, and safe!

While guidelines are subject to change as the State continues to proceed through its phased re-opening and more information becomes available regarding COVID-19, here are the latest FAQs based on the current recommendations.

Extreme Heat or Rain Days

After consultation with the Department of Health, ONLY for periods of the day when it’s not possible to remain outside  (heavy rain, thunderstorms, extreme heat), we will utilize the indoor facilities at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC.  Face masks will be required for campers age 9 and above and staff while we are in the building. Based on the Department of Health code in the event of a Full day of inclement weather we reserve the right to cancel that day of camp and would offer a daily rate refund.
